Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition

Created by Onyx Path - Geist The Sin-Eaters

Originally released in 2009, Geist: The Sin-Eaters was a sleeper hit for the Chronicles of Darkness, finally bringing “life” to the realm of ghosts and death. And now this game of second chances gets a second edition, with Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition, offering a revised and updated rules system and an expanded setting.

BACKER SURVEYS

Over the next few days, you’ll receive an email from us with a special link to your BackerKit survey. It’s important to respond to your survey as quickly as you can since we need this information to fulfill your rewards.

You don’t need to create a BackerKit account to fill out your survey. When you receive the email with the survey, click the survey link to respond. Answer the questions about your reward preferences, provide shipping information, and purchase add-on items if you like. You don’t have access to this survey link yet, but it will be available soon via email!

After you respond to your survey, you can go back later and change your responses at any time before we close the surveys and get our final counts.

If you need to review your information or pledge status, you can return to your survey by clicking the link in your survey email or requesting your survey link under "Lost your survey?" on our BackerKit project page at https://geist2e.backerkit.com

If you used your Facebook credentials to log in to your Kickstarter account, the BackerKit survey is sent to the email address you use for your Facebook account. If you have another email address that you prefer to use, please contact support at https://geist2e.backerkit.com/faq

If you have any other questions or concerns, you can post them to the comments for this update, the comment section, or contact the team via the Contact Creator link on the kickstarter page and Rich will forward it to me.

Thanks again everyone! Keep your eyes open for the next few days as the surveys go out.

KICKSTARTER CONCIERGE

One more quick note to remind you that I'm currently running Onyx Path's latest Kickstarter campaign - a different game about possibly coming back from the dead - Dystopia Rising: Evolution.

It's a little more zombie than ghost...

Dystopia Rising is a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game that quickly grew into a live-action sensation. Now, Onyx Path is pleased to update the live-action setting with Dystopia Rising: Evolution, a tabletop roleplaying game that presents a fresh and exciting take on the post-apocalypse genre.

The Dystopia Rising: Evolution Kickstarter campaign is designed to enable us to create a hardcover core rulebook that will introduce the world, as well as setting up room for expansion and further exploration of the setting. We also want to get at least one print run into traditional distribution and available for sale at game and hobby stores.

Dystopia Rising: Evolution will be powered by Onyx Path’s Storypath system, and includes all the rules you need to play as a survivor in the post-apocalypse, including rules for creating characters for up to 24 different Strains, variations on humanity that survived the Fall. It also has details on the powers of faith and psionics, along with advice on running action-adventure stories, webs of personal intrigue, or procedural investigations. And, finally, dozens of antagonists, including a variety of zombies and raiders to use in your series.

If that sounds like fun, come check out our latest kickstarter at: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/200664283/dystopia-rising-evolution-tabletop-rpg

And don't forget to check your e-mail for a BackerKit link over the next few days!

So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen etc.

So Long, Farewell, Auf Wiedersehen etc.

by Travis Stout

As I'm writing this update, the Kickstarter campign for Geist has just ended, and I am absolutely floored by the response--nearly 2,000 of you brought the game to 232% funding. That's both gratifying and humbling, so I want to start this update by saying thank you for helping us bring our vision for Geist to fruition. I'm immensely proud of the game and all the work everyone has done on it. I think we have an excellent base on which to build in the future, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

But, as you might have surmised from the title of this update, someone else wille carrying that torch (or crossing that River, if you prefer). Once work on the core book for Geist is finished, I'll be stepping down as developer for the game. There are a lot of reasons behind this decision, and it's not one I made lightly, but it's one I feel I had to make.

But fear not! Taking over for me is the eminent Vera Vartanian, who has written phenomenal stuff for a ton of Onyx Path games and who, on Geist, knocked the Underworld section out of the park. I couldn't ask for better hands to leave Geist in, and I can't wait to see what awesome stuff she does with it in the future.

Thank you all again for all your support during this project, and remember: the dead are speaking.

We Did It! Geist: the Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition gets a happy ending!
over 5 years ago – Mon, Aug 06, 2018 at 08:41:54 AM

Hey Kickstarter Krewe!

It's been a crazy month! And here we are, on the last day of July, celebrating a kickstarter success!

We funded the project and unlocked a remarkable 14 Stretch Goals! We added a Companion, Ready-Made Characters, and a Jumpstart to the Geist second edition project line up. We created a 1e bundle with 12 PDFs for $10!

We brought Geist back from the Underworld!!

A Thanks from TRAVIS STOUT,
the developer for Geist: the Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition core book:

Any game project the size of Geist is the result of the efforts of lots of people--writers, artists, editors, layout designers, and more. Today, I want to take a little bit of time to sing the praises of some of those people: specifically, the writers who took my high-level overview and turned it into a living, breathing game full of diverse perspectives and nuanced ideas.

19 people contributed to Geist, with assignments ranging from 3,000 words to almost 20,000. Trying to call out all the excellent work they did would be a blog post almost as long as the book itself! Seriously, everybody brought their A-game to this project. As a developer, you couldn't ask for a better team. If any of you reading this are considering getting into tabletop game development, here's a pro tip: hire people smarter than you. It makes the whole process so much easier. :)

I'd also like to take a moment to specifically thank Whitney "Strix" Beltrán--although scheduling conflicts prevented her from writing on Geist, she was a tremendous help in recruiting a broad, diverse group of writers for the project. On a game like Geist, that touches on issues like marginalization and systemic oppression, it's vital to have a diverse group of writers from marginalized communities so you don't end up making white dude tourism through oppression.

Which as a white dude, I relied on my team to let me know if my perspective and inherent bias did not support the vision of Geist and our desire to elevate the marginalized, forgotten and ignored. We all inhabit this space but so often we don't truly see or hear one another.

THANK YOU

In the spirit of giving thanks, I'd like to send one out to everyone reading this...

So, thank you to all the backers who supported us and made this happen. And a personal thanks to everyone who participated online, either in the comments section of the kickstarter or on social media around the web. If you look at the comments, you'll see the passion of the Geist fan-base. Through jokes, stories, questions and answers, there was a ton of engagement and interest throughout this campaign.

COMMUNICATION

So, as noted, I'll be sending out updates once a month and whenever we've got a new goal, survey, or other item to cover. If you have any questions or need clarification on something related to the kickstarter, you can leave it in the comment section - I will be notified with every addition. Or, you can find the Contact Creator button and Rich will forward your message to me.

For rules stuff and questions about the game itself, it's probably best to visit the Onyx Path forums and talk directly with the team and fans there: http://forum.theonyxpath.com/forum/main-category/main-forum/the-new-world-of-darkness/geist-the-sin-eaters

So, thanks again everyone for giving this game about second chances a second chance with a second edition!!  Give me a ghostly high five if you see me at Gen Con!

Final Hours: CHECKLIST & WHAT COMES NEXT
over 5 years ago – Mon, Aug 06, 2018 at 08:41:49 AM

Hello Kickstarter Krewe,

We're in the final hours of this campaign, and about $2500 away from another Stretch Goal! Let's push! We've had a ton of new backers join us in the past few days, and I'm guessing we'll see a bunch more jump on before the end! So, welcome new backers!

For those new to the campaign, or those who need a refresher, a tour of the basics"

CHECKLIST

1. REWARD TIER, ADD-ONs, PLEDGE TOTAL

Please ensure you've selected the Reward Tier that best represents your desired rewards for this project. An update breaking down all of the Reward Tier decisions is HERE <link>, summarized by this chart:

Click to see a larger version of this chart
Click to see a larger version of this chart

Once you're sure you've selected the correct Reward Tier, double-check to see if there are any rewards that you want to include via ADD-ON, as described in the update HERE <link>.

Your REWARD TIER determines what your base rewards are - you must select a Reward Tier to receive those rewards. Again, your reward list is based on your Reward Tier, not your total pledge amount.

Your PLEDGE TOTAL is the sum of your REWARD TIER + SHIPPING + ADD-ONs.

Shipping is calculated automatically by Kickstarter, based on your location. Add On rewards will be selected in the post-campaign pledge manager sent out once payment processing is complete.

SO: Ensure that you've selected the Reward Tier you want, and included funding for any Add Ons you wish to include. AND - make sure that you are comfortable with the Pledge Total amount, in terms of it covering everything you want and its' affordability.

2. PAYMENT AND CONTACT INFORMATION

Once you're comfortable with your pledge, please ensure that the payment and contact information in your kickstarter account is up to date and correct. Making sure your e-mail is entered correctly and your credit card isn't expired will speed up the next step process. (I have learned from experience!)

WHAT COMES NEXT?

3. AFTER THE CAMPAIGN ENDS

First, we celebrate. Kickstarter will send out a "Hooray!" email confirming the campaign ended with final totals. We'll give ghostly high fives in the comments section.

Then, the Kickstarter payment process begins. Over the next two weeks, kickstarter will begin charging your payment methods for the total amount you've pledged.

If there is an issue with your payment method (expired credit card or incorrect number or pre-paid Visa awaiting funds, for example), Kickstarter will keep trying to process payment during this time.

Once this step is done, which will likely be mid-August, Kickstarter will confirm everything with Onyx Path and transfer the funds over to them (less the Kickstarter fees, of course!).

Once the payment is confirmed, I can begin to set up the project with BackerKit and link it to the Kickstarter data.

Backerkit is a robust fulfillment and pledge management program that will allow us to work with all of the data and distribute the rewards to you. It will take me around a week to set the project up. Once I've got it all entered and built, the team from BackerKit will review to ensure I didn't mess anything up too badly, and then I'll make any changes they've suggested and we can move on to the Survey stage.

4. BACKERKIT SURVEYS

Once BackerKit says I'm good to go, I will send out a survey to all backers. This is why confirming your e-mail is important! The survey will list the reward tier you've chosen, confirm all of the rewards associated with that reward tier, and confirm your total pledge amount.

I expect Surveys to go out 3-4 weeks into August. If you opted to include any Add-On rewards to your pledge, this is the point where you will select them. BackerKit will deduct the cost of your reward tier (+shipping) from your total pledge and show you how much you have to allocate for add-on purchases. You simply select the ones you want and proceed. From that point forward, those add-ons will be included in your list of rewards.

During the Survey period, you can also also choose to increase your reward tier. If you've managed to get a winning lottery ticket and decide it's time to trade up to get two copies of the book or include another add-on, you can do so at this time. Note, you will not be able to reduce your reward tier selection, only increase.

If there was an issue with payment to Kickstarter, you should also be able to address that at this point.

The survey will ask you to confirm your shipping address, even though it'll be some time before we ship out the final product. Do not worry about moving before shipping begins - you will be able to update BackerKit right up until the point that we begin fulfilling the final book. We will send out a notice prior to lock down so you can update any information.

5. REWARD DISTRIBUTION

Once we've got the majority of the surveys confirmed, I will be able to begin some of the digital reward fulfillment - primarily the Underworld Reflections PDF Bundle. I'm targeting mid-September to October for this (assuming surveys are mostly complete). After that, Onyx Path continues the process of building the Geist: the Sin-Eaters 2nd  Edition PDF, and begins work on the other items added during this campaign (Memento Mori, the jumpstart, etc.)

This is a long process, but I will send out regular updates (usually at the end of the month) to keep you up to speed on our progress. There will be strings of updates that are just "still working on it," but I will share new artwork or information when I can.

Eventually, we will have a completed PDF of the Geist: the Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition. We'll take some time to distribute, review, and compile any errata or corrections that need to be made. When we've made any necessary changes, we'll send out updated copy of the PDFs and then begin creating print-ready files for the prestige hardcover version.

It's a long road ahead, but one that we wouldn't be on if not for your support.

STRETCH GOALS

At $117,000 in funding - Memento Mori: Translation Guide – A section discussing how to update your 1st Edition characters to the 2nd Edition rules will be written for Memento Mori, the Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition Companion.

At $123,000 in funding - Memento Mori: Chapter Fiction – New frightening prose will be written for each section of Memento Mori, the Geist: The Sin-Eaters 2nd Edition Companion.

We've got just over 4 hours left! Let's see what we can make happen!

Thanks for giving this game about second chances a second edition!
